Students at this rate have full privileges - they attend two live classes per week PLUS a live online help session (optional), receive a teacher-created CD with packets for each chapter and many useful auxiliary materials, take the National Latin Exam (can win an award!), receive full documentation for your records (detailed grade printout, personal narrative for portfolio, certificate including both letter grade and time spent studying), and are eligible to join both the National and local Junior Classical Leagues -- students who earn a grade of "A" may be nominated to join the National Latin Honor Society! AUDIT OPTION: Study on your own! You will receive all materials (CD, handouts, Quia access) and be able to observe the two main classes/week for just $100/semester ($200/year). Students "auditing" will not receive grades, take the NLE with us (though you may take it on your own), or attend the help sessions. FREE TRIAL: A student may attend Latin 100-400 for the first two weeks for just the cost of materials ($25)! (You will receive our CD in the mail and be treated like a "regular" student with full access.) STELLAE: The STELLAE class (Latin for ages 8-12 / grades 3-7) is only $50 per ten-week session. We offer a fall session (beginning in September) and a spring session (beginning in January). There is also an optional three-week session in December, with a fee of $30 (includes test fee), for students who wish to review for and take the Exploratory Latin Exam. Powerglide - $169.95 - book and CD only; no teacher support. Teaches Latin like a modern language (body parts, family members, shapes) - no preparation to read ancient authors. Rosetta Stone - $195 - CD; no teacher support. Teaches Latin as if you're preparing to travel to Ancient Rome -- though that may be a great adventure, it's not currently possible. Other online teacher-led tutorials (3 found) range from $475 to $500 for Latin I, meeting just once a week. Referrals: A referral discount ($25 for Latin 100-400 or Math, $10 for STELLAE) is available for each person you refer who becomes a student (enrolls for at least one semester/session). The discount would be from your SECOND semester/session’s fee only. If it gets too crazy to keep track of or if people get upset about referrals, we will cancel this program. Sibling discounts: These are based on the assumption that students will re-use their older siblings’ materials (if applicable). (Students in the same class will each get their own supplemental books and handouts, and share a CD.) The first/oldest student per family does not get a sibling discount. His/her younger brothers/sisters would. How it works: Any sibling completed Latin 300/400 (either PROSE or POETRY) or A.P. Calculus with me: Permanent $15/semester discount for siblings (on either math or high-school Latin) – first student does not have to still be enrolled in Latin classes for siblings to get discount. Oldest/first sibling currently enrolled in Latin 100-400 or a math class: $30/sem off 100-400 or a math class; $8/session off STELLAE (does not apply to the 3-week December session). Oldest/first sibling currently enrolled in STELLAE: $8/session off STELLAE Example: One family has their oldest student in A.P. Calculus, another child in Latin 200, and another child in STELLAE. They would receive $30/semester off Latin 200 and $8/session off STELLAE (for the fall and spring sessions, not the three-week December session). These discounts aren’t additive; each student can get at most one discount per semester. Our course fees are as low as possible – they cover materials, but I could earn more money delivering newspapers! I teach because I love Latin and enjoy the students; we have a great time! SCHOLARSHIPS! We aim to have a partial scholarship for each high-school student continuing on to the next Latin level who has the highest grade in his/her class. Our Latin Club also helps fund merit/need-based scholarships when possible. We awarded $350 in scholarships toward the 2007-2008 school year! SAMPLE SCENARIO: Example: A Latin 200 student has $225/semester fees. Total for the year: $450. Say that the student refers 2 friends, one for Latin 100 and one for math. (-$50) Then the student earns a merit scholarship. (-$50) Student's total for the year: $450 - 50 - 50 = $350. Not bad! Email me if cost is an issue -- we do everything in our power to make these classes affordable for all students. Please email Karen Karppinen with questions! |
