HEBE: (Abby) - First Place!
The Greek goddess Hebe was the goddess of youth. She normally appeared in Greek myths as a cupbearer and servant for other Greek gods up on Mt. Olympus. Hebes was supposedly the daughter of Zeus and Hera, and the wife of Hercules. The Romans knew her as Juventas, goddess of youth and youthful activity.

PRE-CONVENTION EVENTS:

ESSAYS: CLOSED 1/26.

Essay # 1: FIRST PLACE - Ben
“Non nubis solum nati sumus” means we are not born for ourselves alone. Cicero says this in his speech /De Officiis/. Cicero was a great orator. This means that we are born to help our nation, our friends, our children, and to realize that we are not the only ones on earth. To be connected with others around us is more important than anything else. It also means that you can’t ignore everyone else no matter who you are. Pay attention to everyone you meet whoever it might be. Don’t go living life in your own bubble, but with others.
There are many examples that other people left after Cicero died. Take /A Christmas Carol/ by Charles Dickens, for example. Scrouge is a miser who is visited by three ghosts and learns what Cicero spoke about in /De Officiis/: Don’t let material objects take over your life.
In the movie/ It’s a Wonderful Life/ it shows how one man is connected with the rest of the world and shows what happens when you take that one person away. He was connected to his brother who he saved from drowning, his wife who would be a spinster without him, and even his town, which he helps by keeping a rich man from owning the whole town.
We are born to do our special part in this world and that includes everyday things we do, such as working and socializing with others. Every day is an opportunity to be born not ourselves alone, but for everyone else. Cicero knew what it meant to him, but do you know what means to you?

Judge 1: Good job! I like the fact that you used examples to show the meaning of the theme.__
Judge 2: He was connected to his brother whoM he saved from drowning. Spelling: Scrooge, Nobis

Essay # 2: SECOND PLACE - Julia
In the sentence “We are not born for ourselves alone” Cicero was actually quoting Plato, a Greek philosopher. This sentence is found in a letter Cicero wrote to his son, Marcus Tulius Cicero Minor. Cicero was born in 106 BC and died December 7, 43 BC, a year after this work was written (in 44 BC). In 46 BC he divorced his wife, Terentia, and married his rich young ward, Publilia, from whom he separated in the following year. In 45 BC his daughter Tullia died suddenly. Cicero was very attached to her and it was in part as a distraction from his grief that he wrote some of his works.
This work called “on Duties’ (Latin, De Officiis) was divided into three books. The first is called Moral goodness, the second Expediency and the third The Right and the Expedient. The first book explains what is morally right, the second what is advantageous and the third, what to do when the two appear to be in conflict. In fact, On Duties was the second book ever published. The first was the Gutenberg Bible.
What I feel Cicero meant by this line was to care for others more than yourself, to be unselfish and to look out for those in need. What I also think he was telling his son was that since you have been given the opportunity, unlike others, to be educated you should help the people of Rome and not use your education as a way to gain money and become wealthy. After losing his daughter he wanted his son to be the best he possibly could. I think this saying is an excellent one and everyone should think about the meaning of it. I believe it would do everyone rich or poor good to listen to this motto and help others around them.

Judge 1: Good job! I like the information about Cicero, although I think your essay should deal more with the meaning of Cicero's statement.
Judge 2: I agree with the other judge; “adherence to theme” means that most of the essay should deal with the theme instead of historical information (which did show some very good research on your part, however!)

Board Game Design: CLOSED 1/26.

Board Game # 1: Settlers of Rome - Disqualified - See Below (Can't follow instructions)

Urbs=city
Via=road
Colonia=settlement
Vinea=vineyard
Calx=stone
Aurum=gold
Aqua=water
Lignum=wood

It is pretty simple. You roll the dice to see who goes first. It begins with clock wise placing one “urbs” and two via one colonia then it continues rolling there will be numbers if that number is rolled like VIII I get VI calx remember if you for get to say the resource or the building in Latin. you don’t get that thing you said and you don’t get the resources back but you can have conversations not in Latin but you still half to say city road settlement vineyard stone gold water and wood in Latin. when you role a 7 the barbarian gets moved and you lose half your cards if you have more then 7 cards and if you rolled the 7 then you can steal one card from the one of the peoples cities or settlement you put on that hex it also jams up that hexes resources until it gets moved it cant be moved back to the hide out if you build a settlement you get one point two for city every point you get you move your mover up one numeral on the aqueduct first one to go all the way around and gets to see the pantheon wins! And you get one resource per hexes surround the city like one aurum hex one gold and one aqua hex one water one clax hex one stone

Judge 1: I'm afraid I don't follow your instructions, but the game seems well put-together.
Judge 2: Calx vs. clax ? Great-looking game, but I too do not understand the instructions.

Board Game # 2: Very good game. Unfortunately, disqualified due to gap in instructions - see below.

CAMPUS MARTIUS

legio gamma 4 aurum
legio omega 5 aurum
ballista 7 aurum
arbor 1 aurum
explorator 5 aurum
canalis 2 aurum
actuarola 10 aurum

GAME PLAY

a domus requires 2 hits from anything to be destroyed
a fortius domus requires 2 hits from L omega or ballista to be destroyed
a legio may destroy any legio of equal or lesser power, a ballista may attack anything 2 squares away.
you must have an explorator to cross arbor.

the explorator and the actuarola do not move, they stay in the green strip at the end of the board, the arbor and canalis can be placed like a domus but can not be destroyed.

Judge 1: Great game idea! I have to guess about the gold: either you automatically get one piece every time you roll, or you get a number of pieces equal to the number you rolled. That's an unfortunate omission.
Judge 2: I don’t quite understand the instructions – how do you earn gold? But yes, good game concept – looks fun! Unfortunately, disqualified -- Game is not “playable” without clarification.

Board Game # 5: Name: The Circus Maximus - FIRST PLACE - Abby
DIRECTIONS TO BOARD GAME:
You choose a chariot (Red, purple, green, or blue) and place it on the starting line. You then roll the die and move the number of spaces you rolled. If you land on a blue triangle, another player picks up a Roman Life card and reads you the question. Same with the purple circle (Latin Vocabulary) cards. If you answer the question right, you stay there, but if you get it wrong, you go back to where you were. When you land on a yellow star, you get a Stella card. Those are kind of like chance cards in Monopoly. When you pass the finish line (Calx ), you get a point and mark it on the Score sheet. You continue racing around the board until one player has five points.
