About Lone Pine Classical School and the teachers:

We've been offering Latin and math classes to homeschoolers in Fort Collins, Colorado since 2003 (beginning under the name "Karppinen Homeschool"). The main teacher is Karen Karppinen; on rare occasions a Latin 300/400 student may help with the Stellae classes (for ages 8-12) -- parents will be notified before the course begins.

Karen's Latin classes have always done well on the National Latin Exam, earning many awards! Starting in 2006, we've also offered these excellent resume-builders to our Latin students: National Junior Classical League, Colorado Junior Classical League, National Latin Honors Society, and our own Latin Club (Homegrown Romans) in which students serve as officers. At the end of the year, scholarships toward the next year's tuition are also awarded (when available) to students with the highest grades in their classes.

Karen was certified in Michigan to teach grades 7-12 math and science, and taught high-school (public and private) in Michigan for four years (before moving to Colorado). She has extensive tutoring experience. Karen has a B.S. in biology, with minors in math and chemistry. She has done coursework equivalent to a minor in Latin; she plans to earn an M.A. in Latin from CU-Boulder when her children are old enough to allow her to attend classes! She credits her perfect score on the GRE (800 verbal, 800 quantitative, 6 writing) to her Latin courses -- Latin really does help immensely with any academic endeavor!

As the online program grows, we hope to offer Latin 100-400 (and Latin "STELLAE" for students ages 8-12) and a two-year math sequence (Pre-Calculus and A.P. Calculus).

Our goal is to offer the highest-quality classes to as many students as possible, so that they can achieve their academic (and personal) goals and have significant advantages when applying for and entering college (awards/honors/scholarships for their college applications, skills to pass any placement test and excel in college Latin courses, and real college credit from the A.P. Calculus exam).

Legalities: "Lone Pine Classical School" is the business name registered with the State of Colorado for Karen Karppinen's (sole proprietorship) tutorial service (and for her own homeschooling of her sons). It is not a private or public "school" in any sense, and should not be interpreted as such. Please email with questions!
